Campaigners call on government not to replace promissory notes with sovereign bond
by
Anglo: Not Our Debt Campaign
24 September 2012
The Anglo: Not Our Debt campaign has warned the government against replacing the Anglo promissory note payments with a long-term sovereign bond. Campaign spokesperson Niamh McCrea described the debt as “illegitimate – it was accrued to pay off the speculators who gambled their money on a dodgy bank now under criminal investigation. It is not the debt of ordinary Irish people and should under no circumstances be reclassified as ‘sovereign’”. Also speaking on behalf of the campaign, Marie Moran (...)

The debt crisis and the fiscal treaty referendum in Ireland
by
Andy Storey
18 June 2012
The fiscal treaty was voted on in a referendum in Ireland on 31st May and was approved by a margin of 60% to 40% (with a turnout of barely 50% of eligible voters). To understand the significance of the treaty and the referendum result, it is necessary to understand the origins of the Irish and European debt crises. The Irish debt catastrophe arose from a massive increase in borrowing during the 2000s on the part of Irish banks: the 6 main Irish banks borrowed €15 billion from abroad in 2003 (...)

6 June 2012
The Anglo: Not Our Debt campaign has lent its support to a protest taking place today at the European Central Bank (ECB) by Irish groups and individuals demanding debt justice. Campaign spokesperson Andy Storey said that the protest was especially timely as the German government has just told the Irish government there will be no deal on the Anglo debt after the ‘yes’ vote in the fiscal treaty referendum. “Once again, the government has been told that being ‘Mister Nice Guy’ gets you nowhere (...)

Ireland: Why to vote NO to the referendum?
by
Andy Storey
11 May 2012
"The fiscal treaty would lead to deeper cutbacks, tax increases and economic recession. The treaty stipulates that Ireland has to cut its ‘structural deficit’ to 0.5 per cent of GDP. The government says that this deficit will be 3.7 per cent in 2015, which means that they will probably have to come up with over €5 billion in further spending cuts and tax increases to meet the new target – a doubling of the austerity already planned for the next three years and that has seen unemployment and (...)

Household tax revolt the price of years of austerity
by
Ruth Coppinger
11 May 2012
OPINION: Ordinary Irish people are being offered permanent austerity while the top 300 have increased their wealth by €12 billion, writes RUTH COPPINGER For any serious commentator this isn’t simply about €100. It is Ireland’s response to four years of austerity, a policy that has brought no sign of economic recovery. Some 14 months ago this Government romped to power. Now anything from 500,000 to one million householders are willing to defy a tax it imposes despite both crude and subtle (...)

The Vampire Treaty and the Irish Referendum
by
Andy Storey
9 March 2012
The Irish referendum on the new fiscal treaty is not about Ireland’s membership in the eurozone. Rather, it is a vote for or against permanent austerity in Ireland. After the release of the new Fiscal Treaty, Angela Merkel said “The debt brakes will be binding forever. Never will you be able to change them through a parliamentary majority”. She has elsewhere spoken of the new fiscal rules as having “eternal validity”. This language calls to mind the creation of a vampire, which is an apt (...)

Zombie banks are dragging Ireland into the ground
by
Nick Dearden
25 January 2012
Just like many African nations, Ireland’s debts must be cancelled or a ’financial bomb’ will go off in its most deprived communities Activists more accustomed to campaigning against the debts of countries like Zimbabwe, Egypt, Ecuador and Indonesia were instead outside the Irish embassy this morning. Dressed as zombies, we hoped to shed some light on the so-called "zombie banks" whose debts continue to drain resources from an Irish public sector that is being slashed to the bone. Ireland’s (...)
