by
CADTM
16 June 2013
This Tuesday 11th June the Greek government decided to close down the public service in radio and television, the ERT. The police neutralized the main emitter and the special forces were used to cut the regional relay stations serving the rural areas. Screens receiving national and local public service television broadcast went blank at 11 pm local time. These closures meant the immediate laying off of 2,656 ERT employees and the loss of 1,400 indirect jobs. The government proceeded by (...)

United against the Troika
by
Esther Vivas
3 June 2013
Who is the Troika? A year ago few knew the answer to this question. We knew it by reference, to its stay in Greece, and it wasn’t good. The Troika was synonymous with austerity, adjustment and cuts, hardship, hunger and unemployment. But it was not until the arrival in Spain of the much denied rescue, in June 2012, that the “men in black” and “Troika” became a household name. Today, a year later, people, sick and tired, are coming out into the streets to say loud and clear: “Troika, go home”. (...)

The fight against the debt and austerity is the task of the day, such as fair measures defending the wages and pensions as well as the social services and common goods. In short, a popular strategy for a left government must be ready to do whatever necessary for this democratic fight. We stand for that strategy.

We, the representatives of progressive political parties from the Mediterranean region, gathered in Tunis from March 23 to 24, 2013, at the call of the Popular Front, and adopted the following resolution. 1. - For more than a quarter of a century, neoliberal capitalist globalization has extended its dominance over the entire planet. The processes launched have accelerated the commodization of the world in favour of a minority and have confiscated peoples´ citizenship and nations´ (...)

Czech Republic : Society Cannot be Cut Out
by
ProAlt
20 April 2013
A Manifesto by ProAlt – Initiatives for Critique of Reform Measures and Supporting Alternatives. They call it a “government of fiscal responsibility,” but they are actually implementing policies that are irresponsible to nature and to society. It is incumbent upon us, the citizens, to take responsibility back. We shall therefore raise our voices in protest, and stimulate a broad discussion of alternatives. We will galvanize public action to show that society cannot be left out of economic (...)

Bulgaria: Political crisis deepening
by
Dancho Medarov
18 March 2013
Dancho Medarov evaluates the political crisis and corruption in Bulgaria and the development and response of the anti-neoliberal movement. Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov has stepped down after a week of protests against rising energy costs. At least 14 people were injured in clashes with the police in the capital Sofia last night, prompting Borisov to claim he could not “stand by looking at a bloody Eagle’s Bridge”, referring to Sofia’s major intersection. Parliament must now ratify his (...)

Éric Toussaint: “Greece must unilaterally suspend repayment of its debt.”
by
Éric Toussaint,
Tassos Tsakiroglou
1 March 2013
“In Greece, the ruling class and the government are destroying democracy,” Eric Toussaint, professor of political science and militant, told the Greek daily Ef. Syn. According to Eric Toussaint, only a determined government which has the support of the people will be able to find a solution to the debt problem. In his view, SYRIZA must not slide towards more moderate positions. Greece seems to be remaining at the center of the debt crisis. You have said that the Greek people, while being (...)

Beware of Europeans bearing gifts
by
Nick Dearden
26 February 2013
President Hollande of France was in Greece earlier this week, offering friendship and much needed investment to the economy. It’s interesting to discover today what he means by ‘investment’. Essentially Hollande is trying to position French companies to take advantage of the privatisation of Greece’s water, energy and railways, as well as forming a partnership to ‘help’ with the search for oil and gas in the region. The generous Hollande is also loaning naval frigates to Greece, with the (...)

The Terrifying Rise of the Far-Right
by
Nick Dearden
26 February 2013
High school teacher Costas was late for a meeting we’d planned because a student of immigrant parents had been abused by two Greek students with a history of racist activities. “This sort of thing is new” he explained to us. “Of course we had some incidents before, but now they are marked by a wider ideology. It’s a minority, but we now have students that have joined Golden Dawn.” The rise of Golden Dawn is one of the most terrifying aspects of the Greek crisis. Opinion polls have suggested this (...)
