by

Auditoria Cidadã da Dívida
10 April 2010
Brazil currently spends 36% of its federal budget on interest and repayments of its external and domestic debt, while social areas such as health receive less than 5%, and education less than 3%. This is also a reality in several countries of the South. Therefore, the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) of the Public Debt in Brazil represents a great achievement of social movements in Brazil and also Latin America. In early 2008, the Member of Parliament (MP) Ivan Valente (PSOL / SP) (...)

by
Auditoria Cidadã da Dívida
3 September 2009
August 19, 2009, was a historic day in the struggle for official auditing of public debt in Brazil, a process already drafted in the Federal Constitution of 1988, and demanded for many years by the Brazilian social movements, especially Auditoria Cidadã da Dívida ("Citizens’ Auditing the Debt"), a campaign that begun after the National Plebiscite about the Debt in 2000, in which more than 6 million Brazilians participated. At 3 p.m. on that day the 16th Plenary meeting of the House of (...)

by
Éric Toussaint
3 March 2009
Some talked about a new start for the movement for another globalization with the World Social Forum in Belém. Do you think this is the case? Since the World Social Forum (WSF) went through difficult moments in 2006, 2007, and 2008, we can really call this 9th edition a new start. It was a huge success in various respects. First it drew a considerable participation, with 133,000, possibly 140,000, registered participants. This is remarkable and makes the Belém WSF one of the most popular. (...)

Let’s put finance in its place !
13 February 2009
For a new economic and social model The financial crisis is a systemic crisis that emerges in the context of global crises (climate, food, energy, social…) and of a new balance of power. It results from 30 years of transfer of income from labour towards capital. This tendency should be reversed. This crisis is the consequence of a capitalist system of production based on laissez-faire and fed by short term accumulation of profits by a minority, unequal redistribution of wealth, an unfair (...)

The current financial crisis demonstrates the limits of capitalism, the hazards of malign neglect in its insufficient regulation and the rush to posses and consume more. The financial crisis, with its manifold consequences, is just one of many threats to life in cities and human settlements everywhere, distorted by land speculation, urban megaprojects, agrobusiness and the privatization of public goods and services, multiply forms of social exclusion and the environmental catastrophe. (...)

Developing countries: dangerous times for the internal public debt
by
Éric Toussaint
11 October 2008
Since the second half of the 1990s, the internal public debt of the world’s developing countries has increased significantly. This increase is now reaching alarming proportions in a number of middle-income countries. While some very poor countries have not yet been affected, the historical trend indicates a continuing rise in the debt level for developing countries. At enormous cost to the countries concerned. According to the World Bank, the internal public debt of all developing countries (...)
